Reference Notes

Equipment manufacturer specs come first. These reference values assume a suitable matching nut or adequately strong tapped hole. The joint, thread engagement, finish and lubricant all affect the correct torque. Do not use this chart to replace specified wheel, engine, structural or other critical assembly procedures.

Choose the Right Condition

  • Dry / plain: unplated steel, no added lubricant; reference nut factor K = 0.20.
  • Dry / zinc: zinc-plated SAE bolts, no added lubricant; reference K = 0.17. Waxed or specially coated hardware may differ.
  • Lubricated: reference K = 0.15. This is not a universal value for every oil, grease, anti-seize or threadlocker; follow the specific product and equipment instructions.

Check your torque wrench units. 12 in-lb = 1 ft-lb; 1 ft-lb ≈ 1.356 N·m. Do not confuse inch-pounds with foot-pounds.

Identify the Bolt

  • SAE Grade 5: commonly identified by three radial lines on the bolt head.
  • SAE Grade 8: commonly identified by six radial lines on the bolt head.
  • Metric: look for the property-class marking, such as 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9.

These tables do not cover stainless steel, brass, nylon, damaged hardware, prevailing-torque locknuts or torque-to-yield fasteners. Follow the applicable tightening procedure for those products.

Reference basis: Fastenal’s SAE torque-tension chart and metric torque-tension chart. SAE values calculated from the published clamp loads using T = K × diameter × clamp load, then converted to ft-lb and rounded to one decimal. Metric N·m values follow the published chart; ft-lb values are conversions. Added in-lb values are converted from the displayed rounded ft-lb values (12 in-lb = 1 ft-lb). The source uses target clamp loads of 75% of proof load. These are general reference values, not an assembly specification.
